COLUMBUS, Ind. - A former nurse is accused of sexually abusing a patient while she slept in a Columbus Regional Hospital bed.
Andrew G. Quiber, 28, of North Vernon, was charged Thursday with sexual battery, a Class D felony, and two misdemeanor charges for allegedly fondling a woman's breast.
He turned himself in and was arrested at 9:00 a.m Friday.
Quiber, who worked for about two years in an inpatient nursing unit, was fired from CRH five days after the Feb. 1 incident, said Denise Glesing, the hospital's spokeswoman.
A probable cause affidavit provides the following account of the alleged incident:
The patient said Quiber helped her change into a hospital gown and helped her into bed.
Later that night, she awakened to find that the snaps of her gown had been unfastened and Quiber was fondling her.
The woman told a police detective that Quiber was sexually aroused.
The affidavit refers to an interview summary composed by a hospital employee, in which Quiber allegedly admitted to having contact with the patient, but that it was to help her go to the bathroom.
Prosecutors also have charged Quiber with battery, a Class B misdemeanor, and public indecency, a Class A misdemeanor.
The hospital immediately suspended Quiber and contacted police after learning about the incident, according to a statement from the hospital.
