基本上new是形容词，newly是副词，二者不同，但new除作形容词外，在一些特定的词组里也可用作副词，虽然在近代英语中，new作副词的用法已废去，但在复合形容词中，它常与过去分词连用，修饰后面的名词，此时，它很易和newly混淆。

　　一般说来，new在一些惯用特定的复合形容词中例如new-born child、new-laid eggs、new-baked bread、new-found pride、new-**llen leaves、new-**ngled gadgets、new-**shioned clothes…。其他可自由加上表示“新的”形容词就用newly，例如：newly-appointed president、newly-married couple、newly-furnished rooms、newly-invented gimmicks、newly issued stamps、newly published books等。

　　new-mown grass=the grass that has been newly mown
　　new-laid eggs=the eggs that are newly laid
