last，latest

　　这两个词都是late的最高级。用作形容词时，last 在意义上和latest有点相近，实际上，它们的涵义和使用场合是不一样的。

　　Last指连续顺序中的最后一个，一般译作“最后的”，有时译为“上一次的”或“过去的”。last的对语是first.例：

　　The last time I saw them was in Paris last year．
　　我最后一次看见他们是去年在巴黎。

　　The last letter of the alphabet is Z．
　　字母表的最后一个字母是Z.

　　I don't know whether you have received my last letter or not．
　　我不知道你是否已收到我上一封信。

　　Latest表示时间上的“最近”，一般译作“最近的”、“最新的”或“最晚的”。latest的对语是earliest.例：

　　The latest news about the Mideast is the beginning of another round of peace-talks．
　　关于中东的最新消息是另一回和谈已展开。

　　What is the latest **shion in town？
　　城中的最新时尚是什么？

　　This is his latest novel；we hope it is not his last．
　　这是他最新的著作，我们希望这不是他的最后一部。

　　请注意，last year、last month、last week、last night都是时间状语，它们的前面无需使用介词，但last century却是例外，我们必须说in the last century或 during the last century.介词in和during不能省略。
